Bok injuries: Deysel on stand-by

2009-11-17 00:00

SHARKS flank Jean Deysel is on stand-by to replace the injured Schalk Burger in the Springbok Test team to face Italy on Saturday.

Burger and Bismarck du Plessis both picked up rib cartilage injuries against France last Friday and they will face fitness tests on Thursday.

Deysel, named in the side to play Saracens tonight, joined the Test squad in training yesterday as back-up to Burger.

“The injuries to Burger and Du Plessis are not serious and we are hoping they will be ready to play this weekend,” said coach Peter De Villiers.

“We have to put a succession plan in place,” he said in reference to Deysel.

The Boks coach emphasised that all 22 players who will see action against Saracens will be considered for the Italian Test in Udine on Saturday.

Selection for the Italian Test will depend on whether he chooses to rest any of his senior players, a week before the tough Test against Six Nations champions Ireland in Dublin.
