Bok trophy tour at Woodburn on Friday

2010-03-16 00:00

THE South African Rugby Union’s Champion Tour trailer laden with trophies won by Springbok and franchise teams last year has enjoyed remarkable support and Friday’s stop at Woodburn Stadium from 2.30 pm to 5 pm is expected to be no different.

An average 1 000 fans per stop have visited the specially designed 15-metre trailer on its 7 000 km, six-week journey throughout the country.

In an unprecedented year, the Springboks were named 2009 World Team of the Year after winning the Lions series, the Tri-Nations, the Nelson Mandela Challenge as well as the Freedom Cup, while the Boks also won the World Sevens Series and the Bulls won the Super 14.

As the Boks are reigning champions, the Rugby World Cup will also be on display, as well as all national trophies such as the Currie Cup.

“The Champion Tour shows the appreciation that South Africa rugby has for its supporters,” said Midlands Rugby Sub-Union president Piet Herbst yesterday.

The 62 000th fan boarded the trailer on its 62nd stop last Thursday.

The record crowd is the 1 186 visitors at Huguenot High School in Valke territory on the East Rand.

Supporters can also learn about the South Africa Rugby Union’s referee recruitment, coaching and high performance and rugby safety programmes.
