Boks: Ricky Januarie suspended

2008-06-05 00:00

An unprecedented seven black Springboks will take to the field for Saturday’s match between the world champions and Wales in a dramatic start to the Peter de Villiers era.

De Villiers — the first black man to coach the South African national side — said nearly half the team to take on Wales in Bloemfontein will be players of colour.

Bryan Habana, Conrad Jantjes, Tonderai Chavangha, Adrian Jacobs, Bolla Conradie, Brian Mujati and Gurthro Steenkamp will all be in the starting XV.

When De Villiers named his training squad last month, he said he does not see players as black and white.

“I never worked with black players and I never worked with white players. I only worked with rugby players throughout my career.”

Only one Sharks player, centre Jacobs, made it to the starting line-up from the Super 14 semi-finalists.
