Bolly’s lavish gifters

2013-10-03 00:00

WHEN you earn rupees by the million, it should be no problem gifting a fellow Bollywood superstar a high-end car, or the best designer jewelry in the world.

And that is exactly what they do, with a culture of trying to outdo each other having evolved in recent years.

Of course, details of the lavish lifestyle, in which Bollywood stars buy their spouses and children the most outrageously expensive gifts are best known to jewelers, big-name designers and the ilk, and rarely become known publicly. But in the process of vying with fellow stars to be the best gift givers, gifts are often presented at public celebrations and news is sometimes quietly leaked to the media to ensure maximum mileage.

A new trend in recent years has been gifting cars, bikes and expensive watches to fellow stars to show appreciation for their performance in a movie, even if the giver had no association with the movie. Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt are particularly renowned for their penchant to give expensive watches, while superstar Shah Rukh Khan gave a superbike to Rohit Shetty, the director of his latest hit at the box office, Chennai Express.

For a cameo role in his sci-fi film Ra.One two years ago, Khan sent Dutt a superbike after the latter refused to discuss payment for his role. Dutt in turn sent rising star Ranbir Kapoor a Harley Davidson motorbike on his 29th birthday. Cars are also favourites, with Khan having given South Indian superstar Rajnikanth a luxury model for his cameo in Ra.One as well. But his car gifting began before that, when he sent a BMW 7 to his Om Shanti Om. co-star Arjun Rampal.

Salman Khan sent Kareena Kapoor a BMW when she refused to accept payment for an item song in his hit film Dabangg 2.

But the record for car gifts remains that of screen legend Amitabh Bachchan, who received one of the most exclusive cars in the world, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, from filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra for his title role in the film Eklavya.

The Bachchan family’s love for cars was also reflected in Abhishek Bachchan, who gave his one-year-old daughter a Mini Cooper. Earlier, Abhishek got a white Bentley from his father for his 31st birthday.

Also joining the exclusive Bentley Club was Akshay Kumar when he gave one to his former co-star, wife Twinkle Khanna. Other spouses who have received expensive cars include Sanjay Dutt’s wife Manyata, who got a Roll-Royce after she gave birth to their twins; and former actress and Big Brother UK winner Shilpa Shetty, whose husband Raj Kundra sent her a BMW Z4 after he left his wife for her. Aamir Khan gave his nephew Imraan Khan a BMW after the success of Imraan’s debut movie, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. But when it came to a present for his new wife, Imraan gave her a Volkswagen Beetle!
