Bongo Maffin enthral crowd at Midmar after an eight-year absence

2014-01-02 00:00

THE Midmar Music Festival crowd roared with appreciation to see the multiple award winning kwaito group Bongo Maffin storm back with a bang.

The group’s performance wowed fans, as it was the first time the members had played together since they parted to pursue solo careers. Lead singer Thandiswa Mazwai said they were happy to be together again.

Bongo Maffin rose to fame in the late nineties with their hit albums The Concerto, Bongolution, IV and New Construction.

The year-end party pulled crowds from all over the province. Nomonde Xaba from Durban told The Witness that she wanted to see Bongo Maffin back on stage again.

“This was the only party to be at to end the old year and start the new year. I made sure that I visited friends in Howick so that I could attend this festival,” said Xaba.

Other people enjoyed braais and drank together.

As the Ukhozi FM deejays counted down to midnight, revellers stood ready with their firecrackers. The obliging weather allowed everyone to enjoy the evening outdoors.

Among other artists performing at Midmar this year were The Soil, Tzozo, Donald, Mafikizolo and others.

The enthusiastic crowd sang along and danced.

In the area as a whole, police spokesperson Lolly Moodley said there were minor incidents of domestic violence, but the victims did not open cases. “About two incidents of domestic violence were reported where both partners were drunk and had fights, but those were not serious. One head-on collision was reported, but no one was injured.”
