Books: spread the pleasure, pass them on

2011-05-26 00:00

ARE you a bookworm and have books piling up that you don’t know what to do with?

Well, instead of having them collecting dust, you can pass on the treasure of reading by supporting South African storyteller and author Gcina Mhlophe.

You can distribute books to schools and adult literacy centres within communities around the country.

The Gcina Mhlophe Nozincwadi Initiative already has the support of Awesome Africa and Hirsch’s. Large boxes have been placed in all Hirsch’s branches around KZN for customers to bring their second-hand books for distribution.

Reading inspired Mhlophe, to think and dream big. She said the idea is to introduce and promote the pleasure of reading to encourage young people to start creating their own stories and their own books so that they can have a say in their future.

One of the beneficiaries of the book donations will be the Zakhe Agricultural College based in Baynesfield. The college follows a normal school curriculum but also equips its students with farming skills.

The college has achieved a 100% pass rate since its inception five years ago.
