Bosses let Addington down

2013-02-13 00:00

THE Health Department yesterday blamed key problems faced by Durban’s Addington Hospital on the lack of strong leadership.

Addressing the KZN Legislature yesterday, the deputy director-general for hospital services, Dr Thokozani Mhlongo, said the hospital was running a number of programmes as part of a turnaround plan.

“Nurses are now working with the doctors to determine the equipment needs …”

She said the lack of leadership stemmed from disciplinary procedures the department implemented following a forensic audit in 2009/10.

Mhlongo said the posts of the hospital’s chief executive officer and its senior medical manager would be advertised.

A permanent replacement nursing manager was also needed after disciplinary processes were instituted against the incumbent, who has since been deployed to another position.

Mhlongo said the department was training staff in the pharmacy section after five officials were suspended and the hospital had increased its staff complement since the beginning of the year.

Due to construction at Addington, some services were relocated to other hospitals for about three months, she added.
