Botched baptism: Pair drown, woman serious

2010-02-15 00:00

TWO men, both members of a Potchefstroom apostolic church, drowned in a botched baptism at Durban’s North Beach early yesterday morning. A woman who was swept out to sea was rescued and is in a serious but stable condition in Durban’s Addington Hospital.

According to a Netcare spokesperson, it is thought that the three were part of a group wading in the shallows when a strong rip current pulled them out. They got into distress as they were unable to swim and were spotted floundering near the backline.

Church members from all over the country met for a function on Saturday at the International Convention Centre in Durban before the baptismal ceremony yesterday morning. The ceremony is thought to have begun before 6 am.

According to a police spokesperson, the church had failed to inform eThekwini Municipal Lifeguards of the ceremony, and no one was on hand to ensure the ceremony was conducted in a safe way.
