Botched cable repair job at Panorama Gardens a deadly hazard

2012-06-18 00:00

RESIDENTS of Panorama Gardens fear that a botched repair job to overhead electrical wires will come into contact with a passing vehicle or electrocute one of the thirsty people who collect water from a nearby communal tap.

They say exposed cables from a broken electricity pole, which municipal workers had taped up about two months ago, are dangerously close to a community’s water source.

A resident said workers had never returned to finish the repair job.

The damaged cables are in Birmingham Road, a few hundred metres from the R33 intersection.

Impoverished people from a nearby informal settlement and passers-by collect water from the communal tap.

“Somebody is bound to get killed,” said one resident.

“Even cars and trucks going past are in danger of hitting it.”

Some people are unaware of the danger.

The driver of a Durban-registered van collecting water from the tap said he was not concerned about the cables.

Municipality manager Mxolisi Nkosi said he was not aware of problem and would be sending workers there today to investigate how the situation can be rectified.
