Both KZN teams have something to fight for

IT couldn’t be starker. While KZN Inland will be fighting for their lives to stay in the A Section of the SA Women’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament in East London today, KZN Coastal will be fighting for their chance to win the title for the second year in a row.

Inland were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by North West in the cross-pool playoffs at Kat Leisure Park and will now meet last year’s B Section winners, Eastern Province, in the battle to avoid the dreaded drop.

EP were beaten on penalty strokes in the shootout after they had ended 1-1 during regulation play.

KZN Coastals put up a heroic fight against hot favourites Western Province and won 1-0 thanks to Netherlands defender Merel de Blaey’s penalty stroke in the second half.

They will meet their opponents in last year’s final, Southern Gauteng, who defeated Northern Gauteng 3-1 in a spirited match that saw the Pretoria girls refuse to lie down.

Inland coach Craig Haley praised Kara Stella, Megan Marr, goalkeeper Megan Woodburn, Tash Linklater, captain Robyn Pearson, Michelle Henwood and forward Linda Tarr for their commitment. It was a tough match against a very good North West side that included former Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School star Celia Evans and former Durban Girls’ College sisters Loreen and Fay Irvine.

KZN Coastals captain Jen Wilson led by example once again as coach Lennie Botha’s side dug deep to defeat Western Province, who enjoyed the majority of possession and territory as well as opportunities in front of goal.

Southerns’ Pietie Coetzee let rip with a rocket to put Southerns 1-0 up against their less fancied northern neighbours and were full value for their 3-1 win against gutsy Northerns.
