Botha and Mahmood sign for Kolkata

2015-04-01 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Defending IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders have recruited Johan Botha and Azhar Mahmood as replacements for the injured pair of James Neesham and Chris Lynn, ESPNcricinfo reports.

Neesham, who failed to make New Zealand’s World Cup squad, has not regained match fitness after an unspecified injury, while Lynn was ruled out for 10 weeks after a hamstring problem in Australia’s Sheffield Shield earlier this month.

Mahmood is vastly experienced, having played 213 T20s, and has knowledge of Indian conditions. He has played two seasons in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab — 2012 and 2013 — and made 382 runs at a strike-rate of 129,05. In 22 matches, he has also taken 29 wickets at an economy rate of 7,61.

Botha (32) recently also signed with the Sydney Sixers for the next three Big Bash League seasons.

Botha has played for South Africa in all three formats of the game, making his Test debut at the SCG in 2006, and has played 78 ODIs and 40 T20 Internationals.

In the IPL he has played for the Rajasthan Royals and the Delhi Daredevils and he will join the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel in this year’s Caribbean Premier League.

The 2015 IPL tournament starts on April 8.
