Boulder thrown from bridge smashes Oslo Beach motorist’s windscreen

2012-11-06 00:00

A PORT Shepstone man had a huge boulder smash into his windscreeen while driving under the bridge just before the Hibberdene off-ramp this weekend.

Saga Joseph of Oslo Beach suffered minor lacerations to his body.

Repairs to the windscreen of his BMW Z4 have set him back R4 500.

The incident took place at about 2.30 am on Saturday as Joseph was travelling to Port Shepstone from Durban.

“A huge boulder landed on the windscreen of my car, causing the glass to shatter,” he said.

The boulder broke into pieces the size of golf balls as it hit the windscreen.

Joseph did not stop to assess the damage, but drove on to the Hibberdene police station where he reported the case.

“I knew that if I stopped, I was either going to be hijacked or robbed, so I carried on driving,” he said.

After reporting the case, Joseph went to the Hibiscus Private Hospital where he was treated.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said that although the Hibberdene area had been a common spot for stone throwing about a year ago, it had been a “long time” since a case had been reported. “Police have tried their best to prevent stone throwing. This area was cleaned of stones and rocks a few weeks ago,” she said.

Wiid added that motorists should avoid driving late at night.

“If the car is not damaged severely, rather drive to a police station or service station. Don’t stop and get out of the vehicle,” she cautioned.
