Bowls kept me healthy, says senior citizen (98)

2011-09-28 00:00

A 98-YEAR-OLD KwaZulu-Natal senior citizen, who was part of a delegation that lunched with KZN Legislature Speaker Neliswa Nkonyeni in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, has attributed her long life to playing bowls “in order to keep myself fit and healthy”.

Although Getrude Ngubane, who was born in Mzumbe on the South Coast and now lives at Muthande Old Age Home in Lamontville in Durban, no longer plays bowls, she said playing for more than 40 years helped to prolong her days.

Speaking at the luncheon hosted by Nkonyeni for senior citizens ahead of the Legislature’s senior citizens parliament scheduled for this week, Ngubane said she fell in love with the game in the early 1950s and only retired from the sport a few years ago.

“I tried to join bowls clubs around Durban but they could not give me membership because of my skin colour.

“Myself and my late husband Louis Ngubane managed to get some help and the bowls ground was built in Lamontville in the 1950s and both of us were members of the club for decades,” Ngubane said proudly.

During yesterday’s luncheon, Ngubane received a surprise belated birthday cake and presents from Nkonyeni.
