Boy (10) fights for life after being hit by car

2010-10-11 00:00

A 10-YEAR-OLD boy is fighting for his life in St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban after he was hit by a car on a rural road in Bhomela, west of Shelly Beach, yesterday morning.

The driver of the Opel Astra stopped immediately and ensured that the boy was taken to hospital. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, but witnesses have said that the boy ran in front of the moving car.

The child’s parents rushed him to hospital.

Paramedics were alerted about the incident and they met the parents and the boy en route to the hospital. According to a Netcare 911 report, the boy was in a critical condition and was intubated and placed on a manual ventilator. He was airlifted to St Augustine’s hospital.

Due to the serious nature of the incident, St Augustine’s Hospital was unable to give an update on the boy’s condition.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid of the South African Police Force in Port Shepstone said an official investigation into the incident has begun.

“A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened,” she said.

“At this stage no charges have been made.”
