Boy (11) opens the door to dad’s murderers

AN 11-year-old boy who opened the door to three men wanting to speak to his father, witnessed the horror murder of his father on Sunday night.

Hibberdene police are investigating the motive for the attack and murder of the 52-year-old man who was gunned down in his home.

The deceased, whose identity has not yet been released, was killed in front of his 11-year-old son in his home at Nyangwini, inland of Hibberdene.

“It is alleged that there was a knock on the door. His son opened the door and three men wanted to speak to his father,” Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid said. “When the father came out of his bedroom, he was allegedly shot several times and died as a result,” she added.

The gunmen fled thereafter. “The motive for the attack is being investigated and no arrests have been made yet,” Wiid added.

Ward councillor for the area, Thubelihle Mbayi said she was away for the long weekend and had only heard of the incident yesterday.

“The community is very shocked by this killing. At this stage we do not have much information about what happened.”

Mbayi said the area was safe and such an attack has unsettled residents.

“There are those problems where there is a family feud but generally this is a safe community. This murder is very strange,” she added.

In a separate incident an elderly couple were robbed in their Marianne Road home in Hibberdene on the same night.

A 63-year-old woman was watching television in her home when she heard a sound in one of her rooms. “She switched on an outside light and was just in time to see a man running from the premises,” Wiid said.

The woman screamed and went into the room where she noticed another man entering through a window.

“He attacked her with a knobkierie and a bush knife, but fortunately she managed to escape,” Wiid added. When she returned to the room she found her 64-year-old husband had been attacked by the intruder.

“He was bleeding and was taken to a nearby clinic for medical attention. The perpetrators took some bedding. A house robbery case was opened,” Wiid said.
