Boy (15) killed while confronting intruder

A 15-YEAR-OLD Maritzburg College pupil was shot and killed when he confronted an intruder inside his family home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Njabulo Ngcobo, a Grade 10 pupil nicknamed “Slow” by his high school friends, was shot twice and died at the scene.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said Njabulo was shot by an unknown man at his home in Imbali unit 18 at about 1 am.

She said it is believed that Njabulo and his mother were sleeping when the burglar alarm went off. She and Njabulo went to check and saw an unknown man. “The boy went to look and was confronted by the intruder; the intruder fired a shot directly at the boy.”

Jeevan said Njabulo tried bravely to chase after the intruder after being shot once, but was shot again.

“The boy was shot two times and he was fatally wounded.”

She said no arrest had been made.

The school said they would be flying their flag at half-mast in his honour today. “It is with a huge sense of sadness that we, the Maritzburg College community, mourn the tragic passing of Njabulo Ngcobo,” said headmaster Chris Luman in a statement.

The statement said Njabulo was “a likeable young man with a pleasant, respectful demeanour”. He was very popular among his peers and was a key member of the 16A basketball team.

Head of basketball Jenny Orchard said Njabulo was a talented basketball player and would spend hours on the basketball courts. She said he could “sink a three-pointer from anywhere”.

The school said that academically, he was a capable pupil who was performing well. His registrar, Curtis Huysamen, loved his “enthusiasm and sharp wit” and emphasised the integral role he played in the class.

“Out of respect to Njabulo, the school flag will fly at half-mast and there will be a moment’s silence at sports fixtures this week. A memorial service will be held in the Alan Paton Hall on Friday.”

Attempts to contact his family were unsuccessful last night.

By late yesterday, condolences were pouring in through the Maritzburg College Twitter page.
