Boy (4) raped and killed

THE Site 11 community in Woodlands is in shock after a four-year-old boy was brutally raped and killed by a tenant in the area on Sunday evening.

Wandile Maphanda (4) and his two-year-old brother lived with his paternal aunt, Zibuyile Maphanga, in a rented room. He was raped and killed, allegedly by a neighbour, minutes after he disappeared while playing with other children.

A 26-year-old suspect has been arrested, but cannot be named as he is yet to appear in court.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday Maphanga said she looked after Wandile and his two-year-old brother after their father died in April and their mother moved back to the Maqongqo area where she is from, and where she works awkward shifts. She said their father, Mzwandile Maphanga, previously rented the room where Wandile was killed.

She said that on Sunday at about 5 pm Wandile went to play outside with other children while she was bathing his younger brother.

“When I finished I went out to look for him but I could not find him anywhere,” said Maphanga.

“I checked with the neighbours who all said they did not see him; I even dispatched my older children to my cousin’s house to look because I thought that he might have wandered over there but he was not there.

“Children who had been playing with him told me that they last saw him being pushed on a bicycle by the suspect.”

The suspect’s mother called her and said she had found Wandile. They found him lying face down on a bed. “His shoes and his jeans had been removed and he had been brutally raped. I tried to wake him up but his eyes turned white and then I realised that he was dead and we called the police.”

The suspect had fled, but the police received a tip-off that he had gone to Mpophomeni.

Maphanga said she was shocked and angry about what happened. “When we found Wandile he was covered by a sheet and we do not know whether [the suspect] was planning to dispose of the body.

“I have always known that this area was crime-ridden. I thought if we kept the children playing inside the yard they will not be in danger. Now it’s hard to trust all the other people in this area who are genuinely friendly with children.”

Neighbours reportedly torched the suspect’s belongings and his mother fled to Mphophomeni under police escort as the community members were calling for her blood.

Police spokesperson captain Thulani Zwane said police investigations are continuing.
