The Kershaw Park-based Braaiketts tennis club travelled to Westville for their Super League match over the weekend.

This KZN mixed league is proving increasingly popular, and Braaiketts number ones Gareth Greenwood and Monica Gorny took on Westville number two couple Lindsay North and Letika Venter. Losing the first set 6-2, Greenwood and Gorny fought back to take the second 6-3. It came down to a championship tiebreaker and the Braaiketts pair clinched it 10-4.

Braaiketts number two couple Boyd Michau and Lyndal Robertson faced Westville number ones Andrew Junkuhn and Beverly Freakes, who took the first set 6-4 and were up in the second. Michau and Robertson came back to lead the second set 6-5 when Junkuhn was forced to retire due to the intense heat, giving Braaiketts the match.

Reenen de Vries and Sue Mackay, the Braaiketts number threes, matched their skills against Westville counterparts Jonathan Lowings and Tamsyn Hall. The Westville duo were always on top, coming away with a 6-2 6-2 win.

At the end of round one, sets were even at 4-4. The second round saw Greenwood and Gorny versus Junkuhn and Freakes. The Braaiketts couple gained the ascendancy from an early stage to win 6-2 6-2.

De Vries and Mackay met North and Venter, the latter pair triumphing 6-0 6-1. With the sets at 6-6, the outcome was decided on the match between Michau and Robertson, and Lowings and Hall.

An exciting encounter saw the Westville couple win the first set 7-5 after trailing 5-3. At 6-6 in the second, the match went to a tiebreak, which saw Michau and Robertson have set points at 6-3. Lowings and Hall got back to 6-6 and they also had a match point at 7-6, which was saved.

The Westville couple finally clinched the tiebreak 9-7 and with it the match, the score being 7-5 7-6.

This gave Westville the tie by eight sets to six, which works out to 16 points to eight.

Braaiketts meet Durban North at 1.30 pm on Saturday at Kershaw Park.

The Wilson Junior Tournament takes place on April 4, 5 and 6. Entry forms are available from Jackson Sports. For further information, phone Hilary at 082 553 2971.
