Brave girl endures hours wedged awkwardly in water pipe

THE mother of a nine-year-old child who was rescued after being stuck in a water pipe for almost three hours said she was amazed by her daughter’s bravery.

Thandazile Deyi (32) was relieved that Nokhanyo was rescued unharmed after she had been trapped in a drain pipe in the Ezingolweni area on the South Coast on Thursday afternoon.

She had been playing with other children around the pipes when she slipped buttock first down the pipe and got wedged in the narrow opening leaving her in an awkward folded position.

“Children play there all the time, but after this incident we have realised that Ugu District Municipality should either close or remove the pipe because it poses danger to our children,” she said.

Deyi said she was at work when she heard that her child had been stuck in a water pipe and she rushed to the scene.

“People were trying to help. While waiting I was going crazy thinking that my child will be paralysed,” she said.

“Today she went to school to fetch her report and I was excited that she passed her Grade 5 half-year exams,” she said.

She said her daughter was brave because she did not cry.

Xolani Cwele was the first on scene and called the police.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said Port Shepstone SAPS search and rescue, Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire services received the frantic call and immediately went to the area. “They were unable to cut through the pipe and they decided to put oil around her body and then gently try and free her,” said Botha.

He said paramedics examined the child and found that she had sustained no injuries.

Attempts to get a comment from Ugu District were unsuccessful.
