‘Brawl’: advocate must appear in regional court

2010-09-14 00:00

A SENIOR Pietermaritzburg advocate has been summoned to appear in the regional court on September 30 in connection with an alleged assault on a colleague, advocate Mergen Chetty, at a function in June.

This follows a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions to charge the advocate with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm arising from the incident.

The accused’s name cannot be published until he appears in court as he has now been charged.

The Witness has established that the advocate is also currently facing an internal disciplinary inquiry by the local Bar.

The alleged assault took place on June 11 at a function held at the Advocate’s Chambers.

The function was held to bid farewell to newly appointed Judge Rob Griffiths, and to celebrate the start of the 2010 football World Cup when Bafana Bafana took on Mexico.

Chetty was allegedly knocked unconscious for several minutes after the advocate had punched him in the face.
