Brazen crime

2009-04-30 00:00

A telling and ominous sign of the increasing brazenness of crime in this country is the readiness of criminals to kill police officers in the line of duty. Two were gunned down in Inanda near Durban earlier this month. Two more have this week been shot in the heart of Durban itself.

There is little doubt that such action will raise the temperature on criminality and lead to more outright shooting of suspects by police as opposed to securing arrests. There will be public sympathy for such a response despite the concerns it involves regarding due process. Right now, in the light of this week’s events, there can only be sympathy for those who have lost loved ones — probably breadwinners also — and a desire to commend the SA Police Services for their determination to hold the line against criminal acts in a fraught and often dangerous situation.
