Bribery: cop’s case put off

2011-08-12 00:00

THE sentencing of Howick police sergeant Mlungisi George Khena by the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on a charge of extortion has been postponed to October 14.

Khena was to have been sentenced yesterday after he was found guilty of soliciting bribes between 2008 and 2009 from people whose relatives were tried in Ladysmith.

The trial started in 2009, but senior prosecutor Renee Schuler said the state hopes to finalise it in October.

On Wednesday the Howick Magistrate’s Court dropped another extortion case against Khena after it was argued by his defence that he had not been charged within the prescribed 48-hour period.

He was arrested on July 27 after he allegedly solicited a R15 000 bribe to make a case go in favour of Moses Madondo, who was charged with murder and attempted murder.

Captain Jageesh Devnarain Singh of the Pietermaritzburg crime prevention unit said Khena is not off the hook.

“Technically he should have appeared in court on a Friday and not on a Monday of the week after his arrest. We are correcting that error and he will be back in court soon,” said Singh.

Khena is also standing trial in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court for armed robbery.
