Bright eyed and bushy tailed

More than 250 magnificent mutts are expected to enter the sixth annual SPCA/Hill’s Township Dog Show in Mpophomeni Township at Howick this coming Sunday at 9 am.

The organisers, uMngeni SPCA and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, say they believe the event has a visible impact on animal welfare in the host community.

Unlike traditional dog shows, to which the entrants arrive preened and perfect, the contenders at the SPCA/Hill’s Township Dog Show first attend a clinic for a thorough health check, are de-wormed, vaccinated against rabies and dipped. They are then given a new collar and lead before strutting into the show ring.

Judges will be looking for healthy, well-cared-for dogs that have a visibly strong bond with the owner, said the show’s founder, Adrienne Olivier.

Every entrant will receive pet food, a dog bowl, a warm winter blanket and a copy of an animal care magazine. The overall Best Dog in Show will win a cosy kennel and pet food will be awarded to winners in all classes. During the day there will be music, dog jumping and a dog training demonstration led by a group of handlers from Bruntville, near Mooi River.

People interested in entering their dog can come along on the day or call Jabulani Mshengu at the uMngeni SPCA on 033 330 4557.
