Bright orange orb was a R45 hot-air lantern

EXPLAINING a strange light in the South Coast skies in the middle of the night has been the subject of several interviews with people who said they had seen the mysterious phenomenon.

Now a plausible solution could literally have come to light.

At a bonfire-on-the-beach at Pennington early on Monday evening, many of the participants spotted a bright orange light when their eyes and minds were still clear.

The Witness set out to track down the mystery and an anonymous Johannesburg family — positioned further up the beach — were happy to fill in the gaps.

They produced what looked like a flat plastic packet and used a cigarette lighter to ignite the miniature heater, and a hot-air Chinese lantern took off into the night sky after a few false starts.

The bright orange orb moved steadily downwind out to sea.

The family said they had paid R45 for the lantern at a Chinese-run shop.
