Brooklyn police station: overwhelmed by curious visitors, media

2013-02-18 00:00

UNKNOWN people are ringing the Brooklyn police station in Pretoria asking to speak to Oscar Pistorius and hanging around in a bid to be allowed to visit him.

A source at the station said that since Pistorius was booked in there on Friday, the police had been overwhelmed by inquisitive visitors and media from around the world.

Only Pistorius’s closest family and lawyers are being allowed access to him, but two pastors who arrived asking to pray with the runner were allowed in.

The source said he was being treated like any other awaiting-trial prisoner.

He gets three meals a day and has a mattress and a couple of blankets.

His family brought him food and clothes at the weekend.

The source declined to say whether Pistorius was sharing a cell, but several suspected criminals spent the weekend in the cells.

“The cells are built around a courtyard. Detainees get time to stretch their legs and walk around the courtyard.

“The rest of the time they sit and talk.”

Asked about Pistorius’s state of mind, he said he was “okay”.

Pistorius’s lawyer, Kenny Oldwage, said he “looks good under the circumstances”, but the experience was proving extremely difficult for him.
