Brothers make waves at waterski champs in the U.S.

2013-09-26 00:00

WITH a surname like Fisher, it’s no surprise that brothers Jared and Travis are adept at some form of watersport. In their case it’s waterskiing. The duo recently competed at events in Florida in the Unite States.

Travis is currently a Grade 12 pupil at Crawford College La Lucia and Jared is a past pupil who finished in 2009.

They headed to Palm Bay, Florida, for the John Meyer Memorial Waterski Championships and thereafter represented South Africa at the World U21 Waterski Champs in Winter Garden, also in Florida.

At the John Meyer Memorial, Travis finished second, notching up a personal best of one buoy at 11,25 m at 58 km/h. This is no mean feat as such an accolade belongs only to a handful of South African waterskiers. His feats on the water saw him achieve a score high enough to qualify for his open national waterskiing colours.

Jared went one better, winning the event and achieving his personal best of two-and-a-half bouys at 11,25 m at 58 km/h.

At the U21 World Champs Travis fell early in his run, resulting in a poor score that put him out of contention. Jared had better luck and managed to work through the event, finishing a credible 20th overall.
