Brumbies star hit by car outside nightclub

There are fears that Brumbies rugby player Shawn Mackay (26), who was injured in a pedestrian accident in Durban in the early hours of yesterday morning, may be paralysed.

Mackay suffered a broken vertebra and multiple face and leg fractures after a fun night out with his team-mates ended in disaster.

The Brumbies were defeated 35-14 by the Sharks in a Super 14 match in Durban on Saturday.

Sharks’ team doctor, Dr Craig Springate, spoke to The Witness after Mackay underwent emergency surgery.

“He has suffered multiple injuries and fractures, which can be classified as serious.”

Mackay will be on a ventilator for the next 48 hours in the ICU at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban. Springate said he is in a critical but stable condition.

Springate said that the Brumbies team doctor is keeping Mackay’s family updated, he added.

Mackay was leaving the Clapham Grand nightclub when he was hit by a car, believed to be an emergency response vehicle.

The driver drove away, but returned 10 minutes later.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said as Mackay “had suffered massive injuries, he had to have advanced life support intervention”.

One of the club’s owners, Cathy Hudson, said Mackay was assisted by nightclub employee Dave Allen who offered him first aid until paramedics arrived.

SAPS spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe said a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
