Budget: CronjÉ’s fiscal watchdogs to ensure careful spending

A CRACK team of experts in fiscal controls will ensure that the province’s R11 billion infrastructure budget is well spent and not wasted on replacing shoddy work or graft.

This key project by the KZN Treasury last year successfully curtailed over-expenditure and brought about prudent fiscal management in all departments, said MEC for Finance, Ina Cronjé as she delivered her provincial treasury budget to the KZN Legislature yesterday

Part of the R536,4 million budget will go to municipal support and internal audits in order to help municipalities and provincial departments get clean audits.

Cronjé also committed treasury to ensure that more attention is paid to budget implementation and planning.

On criticism over the lack of detail on job creation, Cronjé said Treasury has no specific function which can create jobs.

“As stated in my main budget speech, the budget should set the pathway to decent work and economic growth.

“We should see an increase in employment by the provincial government early in the new year, especially in Education and Health.”

Cronjé said each department will put the flesh on their piece of the skeleton and give the necessary details regarding job creation,
