Budget: Sash happy about child grant

2008-02-19 00:00

The Black Sash yesterday welcomed indications from Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya that the child support grant will be extended to the age of 18 and the means test recalculated.

In a statement ahead of Finance Minister Trevor Manuel’s budget speech tomorrow, the organisation urged Manuel to “make good” on Skweyiya’s announcement in his speech … and begin the roll out of the Child Support Grant to those vulnerable children between the ages of 14 and 18.

The Black Sash has for many years lobbied for the extension of the grant, which is currently cut off at the age of 14, arguing that young teenagers are particularly vulnerable as they enter adolescence, and that the Child Support Grant would help many of these youngsters complete their schooling and go on to provide for themselves in South Africa’s skills-driven economy.
