Budget: parties in KZN welcome austerity plan

2013-03-13 00:00

POLITICAL parties have welcomed the KZN budget’s emphasis on austerity.

They also sang from the same hymn sheet when they urged provincial government departments to spend the budget allocations wisely and to stick to Finance MEC Ina Cronjé’s austerity plan.

IFP provincial leader Blessed Gwala said departments would need to spend their allocations in a manner that would benefit people on the ground.

DA spokesperson on finance Johann Krog said the budget posed an acid test on whether controls would be implemented.

“We have the right allocations of money made. We have to implement it and spend it. If tender processes are not controlled and if Treasury does not control supply chain management, then we will remain with a problem,” he said.

The ACDP’s Jo-Ann Downs said: “It is a tight budget because we lost quite a lot of money because of adjustments in the equitable share allocations.”

The ANC urged all government officials to ensure that they curtailed wasteful expenditure and focused on efficiency.

“This should be done in the manner that does not hinder service delivery,” the party said in a statement.
