Bumper tennis event at Kershaw Park

2007-12-27 00:00

The popular Braaiketts Tennis Tournament takes place at Kershaw Park from January 9 to 13 and is expected to draw an even bigger entry than last year.

The prize money has been upped considerably with R8 000 on offer for the winner of the men’s singles title.

The tournament also has a major junior section with age groups for the boys and girls divisions from 8 and Under through to 18 and Under levels. There are also open events for boys and girls, as well as men and women.

Notable entries from outside KZN in the Men’s Open, which also doubles up as the KZN Open, are Ruan Roelofse and Jason Wolfson. Roelofse plays a serve-and-volley brand of tennis while Wolfson is noted for his expertise in playing from the baseline and endeavours to wear out his opponents in long rallies.

The midlands interest is undoubtedly supplied by Pietermaritzburg’s Boyd Michau and Gareth Greenwood. Having come off injuries, both of the locals are taking this tournament seriously in an effort to start the new year off on a high note.

Another player fancying his chances is Heinrich Heyl, who has a world ranking around the 950 mark.
