Burglars blow up Umdoni Golf Club safe

2013-03-29 00:00

IN what has been described as a “very professional job”, a substantial sum of money was removed from Umdoni Golf Club’s safe after it was blown open with explosives in the early hours of Monday morning.

The burglars gained access to the premises through the roof and silenced the alarm system. The crime was detected only during working hours and they had ample time to make their getaway.

According to general manager Rynardt Crous: “They moved systematically through the entire building, smashing down doors, and they even found a minor safe in an area which most of the staff were unaware of.”

In addition to the money — the proceeds of a busy weekend’s takings — police listed a laptop, liquor and clothing among missing items.

The police bomb squad is reportedly investigating the nature of the explosives used.

“Fortunately, nobody was hurt or subjected to any bad experience,” Crous said.

He added that he was contemplating the implications of introducing a cashless system in the club.

“As it is, a large part of our takings were in plastic money, but an incident such as this is clearly not to be repeated and it poses questions on how best to achieve that.”
