Burglars hit church — for the third time

2008-01-21 00:00

A sound system worth R30 000 was stolen from the Bethel Assemblies Of God Church in Dambuza on Saturday when it was broken into for the third time in less than a year.

The burglary was discovered by church members on Saturday evening at 7 pm when they went for their prayer meeting.

According to church member Sipho Mngadi, the congregation are very worried about what is happening to their church after it was hit twice in the middle of last year.

"We are dumbstruck at the thought that someone would actually want to come and steal from a church," he said.

Mngadi said that each time that the thieves broke into the church, they took a sound system.

"I don’t understand why they have to keep terrorising us. We did not report the first two incidents and maybe that is why they took a third chance. Our spirits are broken by this and we just want whoever it is to stop this act," he said.

Pastor Phumani Zondi said: "They actually broke down the wall just to get in. If this is the way things are going then I don’t know what kind of security we must have in order to keep these culprits out. We are trying to build up our church and they are breaking it down."

Police spokesman Superintendent Henry Budhram confirmed that a case of house breaking has been opened.
