Burst pipe finally fixed after nine hours of water ‘wastage’

2015-02-10 00:00

OVER nine hours after a water pipe burst was reported by Manor Flats residents, the problem was finally solved yesterday afternoon.

A resident, who requested anonymity, said a pipe burst on Mason Road on Sunday night and he, as well as a neighbour, reported it to the Msunduzi Municipality several times.

But the residents had to look on as the hours went by, with hundreds of litres going to waste. By 1 pm yesterday, the broken pipe was fixed at last.

“Thousands of litres must have been wasted. It was flowing like a river. I first reported the matter at 2 am and the municipality responded very late,” he said. “It has been said that the province might face water or a drought crisis but we still have water being wasted like this.”

He said they often experience such incidents, especially after big storms like the one on the weekend. He blamed the ageing infrastructure for their ongoing water woes.

Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha confirmed the broken pipe was fixed.

She appealed to residents to be patient, as “the municipality is aware of the ageing infrastructure and it is raising funds to repair them”.

Meanwhile Raisethorpe residents are experiencing a similar incident as water pumped into a reservoir situated on Sohan Crescent caused it to overflow, with water gushing onto the road as a result.

Mafumbatha said: “We are aware of the problem and the municipality is working on fixing the problem.” She could not be drawn to comment further on when the matter would be resolved.
