Bus won’t start as Bafana prepare to leave airport

2013-08-13 00:00

BEING stopped in their tracks by competitors on the soccer field is one thing, but it is generally accepted that you need to get to the field first …

The Hyundai bus waiting to pick up the Bafana Bafana team at the King Shaka International Airport yesterday, however, proved a worthy and staunch opponent — it refused to budge after the team got on board.

According to a bystander, in the end two cars had to be roped in to jump-start the bus so the team could finally be on their way.

The squad arrived in the city yesterday ahead of their game in the 19th edition of the Nelson Mandela Challenge tomorrow, when they face reigning African champions Nigeria at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kick-off is at 8.15 pm.

Once the wheels got rolling, they dropped in at their sponsor SAB, and thereafter held a press conference, where they made a renewed commitment to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy when they take to the field tomorrow. There was also praise for the good support they usually receive from the Durban crowd.

Yesterday afternoon was spent training.

Safa spokesperson Mahlomola Morake only laughed yesterday when asked about the incident. “Yes, it did not want to start, but eventually it did start.”

He would, however, not confirm that the they needed some spark from the two vehicles to get going.
