Businessman found dead

2010-03-23 00:00

A LOCAL businessman was found dead at his home in Havelock Road yesterday, police said.

Shaffee Mohammed (68), who owned a fire extinguisher business, was found dead at his business premises where he also lived. He was found by a friend who had come to visit him.

Mohammed’s business was to install and repair fire extinguishers.

Police spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe said police believe Mohammed was strangled with a nylon rope that was found around his neck.

Radebe said a friend of Mohammed went to visit him at home, and when he could not get a response, he returned and still could not find him, so he called a locksmith to open the door.

Said Radebe. “When the locksmith opened the door, they found him on the floor inside his home with that nylon rope around his neck.”

Radebe said police believe Mohammed was killed on Saturday morning as he had been working on Friday.

She said that the investigation is continuing and a murder inquest docket has been opened

The police doubt the motive for the murder was robbery because nothing was stolen, she added.

A relative who did not want to be named said the family has suffered a great loss.

The relative said: “He had been operating his business for the past 20 years and the members of the community loved him dearly. He will be greatly missed.”

He said that most of all, Mohammed’s six brothers and sisters will miss his “compassion, kind heart and his considerateness”.

“Mohammed had a tendency to put the needs of everyone else above his own,” said the relative.

Mohammed was buried yesterday.
