Businessman helps duped young couple

2013-08-22 00:00

SOUTH Coast businessman Alfonso Middleton was the first to step into the breach yesterday to help a young Boksburg couple whose wedding was almost cancelled after a wedding organiser allegedly cheated them.

The plight of Maricha Swanepoel and her fiancé, Martin Goosen, had hardly been published on sister paper Beeld’s website when Middleton contacted the paper to offer the couple accommodation on the KZN South Coast.

“I just want to help the couple. If one can help then one must do so,” said the businessman.

Michelle Joubert, a wedding organiser, then informed the paper she would help to get sponsors for the wedding on September 7.

This after a man named Fanie, who told the couple he was the manager of a popular venue in Boksburg, disappeared with a R16 000 deposit the couple had paid to book their wedding reception.

The couple learnt this week that Fanie was a faux manager, that his surname is Grové, and that he was on the lam with a trail of debts.

They have laid charges of fraud and theft at the Boksburg police station.

Grové did not answer his cellphone yesterday.
