Busted: Police stumble on haul

2012-07-10 00:00

A ROUTINE crime prevention tour in a rural neighbourhood turned into a huge drug bust.

Police stumbled upon two 28-year-old men busy packing their dagga harvest during a routine crime prevention operation in the Mbongolwane area.

The police entered the Magwaza homestead at Edakeni and found two dagga growers packing their harvest. The men were working too hard to be on high alert.

The Eshowe Cluster police seized the green harvest, which was being packed in 60 kg maize bags, 50 litre drums, and all manner of containers for transportation to “clients” in other parts of the country.

The police estimated the total haul to be worth at least R1 million.

A man who casually appeared on the scene during the investigation was also arrested for the possession of dagga.

The trio will appear in the Eshowe Magistrate’s Court to face charges of drug possession and trafficking.

Possession of dagga is banned under the Drug and Drug Trafficking Act, which is currently facing a constitutional challenge in the Pretoria High Court.
