Busted: men stealing tyres worth R60 000

2009-12-11 00:00

THE work of an astute policeman who foiled the theft of truck tyres worth R60 000 has been praised by a local businessman.

Wayne Schwulst of Tyre Magic in Mkondeni told The Witness that he had despatched a load of retreaded truck tyres to Ladysmith yesterday, but was surprised to receive a call from a policeman telling him the tyres were being offloaded on the Howick Tweedie onramp.

Schwulst said Inspector Anil Ahir of Howick police station was on his way to work at 5.30 am when he noticed the tyres being loaded into a bakkie parked behind the truck.

He stopped and asked those who were busy loading to produce documentation to prove they were entitled to remove the tyres. When they could not, he called Schwulst, who realised something sinister was afoot.

The men, including the truck driver, were arrested.

“Inspector Ahir went out of his way and his hard work paid off,” said an elated Schwulst.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident and said she has commended Ahir for his vigilance and the apprehension of the suspects.
