Buthelezi a YouTube star on his birthday

2014-08-28 00:00

IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who turned 86 yesterday, has also become a YouTube star.

A short video featuring Buthelezi and isicathamiya group Amabutho at the “re-premiere” of the 1964 film Zulu in London’s West End has been posted on YouTube. The video was produced by Henry Coleman, an organiser of the June event who is also shooting a documentary on the making of Zulu.

Buthelezi starred in the film as the Zulu king Cetshwayo kaMpande.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Zulu’s release a charity gala screening was held at the Odeon, Leicester Square, to raise funds for the British charity Walking With The Wounded, and the David Rattray Memorial Trust, an educational charity which commemorates the well-known historian and guide who was murdered in 2007, and Sentebale, a Lesotho children’s charity founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. Prince Harry — who also features in the video — attended the premiere along with Buthelezi.

Zulu recreates the battle of Rorke’s Drift from the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

Coleman is planning to come to KwaZulu-Natal to complete the filming of his documentary and said he is sending a DVD of the video to Buthelezi who he met at the premiere.

IFP secretary general Sibongile Nkomo yesterday said in a statement Buthelezi had the courage of his convictions and deep-rooted integrity.
