Buyers coming from afar

2011-04-13 00:00

NGUNI buyers from as far as Limpopo are expected to bid at the annual production sale by KZN’s top Nguni breeders, at the Mooi River sales yard on Saturday.

Rolf Aadnesgaard of AAM Livestock Agents & Auctioneers said this year’s Mooi River Nguni auction will see 11 bulls, 11 cows in calf, four cows with calves, 74 heifers in calf and 36 open heifers come under the hammer.

The breeders have aimed to present young breeding stock of the highest quality, offering longevity and traceable bloodlines.

Aadnesgaard said the size of the national Nguni herd continues to grow. King Goodwill Zwelethini and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife are among institutions who prize the traditional Zulu bovines for their magnificent horns and multi-coloured hides.

“The Nguni cattle, which have long been part of the Zulu people’s spiritual and aesthetic lives, have since the seventies been prized by breeders for their hardiness, productivity as well as their ability to forage on steep slopes and thick bush,” he said.

The auction starts at 11 am on Saturday. The full catalogue is available at www.aamkzn.co.za.
