By-election: Newcastle chose DA candidate

2011-10-07 00:00

THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has retained Ward 4 in Newcastle after Wednesday’s by-election, with candidate Tanya de Jager winning by a landslide claiming 94,88% of the vote.

DA KZN Leader, Sizwe Mchunu, who was also in Newcastle to support de Jager, said, “The party is grateful to its followers who turned out in their numbers to vote despite the freezing weather.”

“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our supporters, many of whom made the effort to get to the polling stations in difficult weather conditions.

“We are grateful for their support, without which this success would not have been achieved,” said Mchunu.

He said, “As a party we were looking to achieve an increase on our 51% majority.

“We are therefore extremely pleased with the 94.88 % achieved in this by-election and will be looking to further increase our support base in this area.”

Mchunu said the party believes that these results reflect the transformation taking place in the province’s political landscape, which is just the beginning of a wave of change.
