By-elections: polling goes smoothly

2009-06-25 00:00

THE three political parties that contested the ward 25 by-election in the Msunduzi Municipality yesterday said the polling proceeded without hindrance.

Ward 25 previously belonged to the Democratic Alliance and became vacant after DA councillor Mark Steele became an MP.

The ANC, IFP and DA contested the ward.

Six by-elections were contested in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday, two in the midlands and four in the eThekwini Municipality.

The ANC secretary in the Moses Mabhida region, Supa Zuma, said he fancies his party’s chances of winning the ward.

Disturbances were reported at two voting stations when council employees allegedly campaigned outside Carter High School and All Saints Church for the ANC, a claim the party and the municipality denied.

The provincial head of the Independent Electoral Commission, Mawethu Mosery, said no violence was reported to his office.
