CAF: Chiefs’ first tie against Namibians

2013-12-18 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Kaizer Chiefs will begin their CAF Champions League journey against Namibian side Black Africa next year.

The South African representatives will lock horns against the Namibians in a two-leg encounter starting at the FNB Stadium on the weekend of February 7-9, with the return leg to be staged in Windhoek on the weekend of 14 to 16.

Amakhosi booked their place in the 2014 continental showpiece after winning the PSL last season, finishing above Platinum Stars by a single point to end their eight-year league drought.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys will be returning to CAF competitions for the first time since they were banned for three years back in 2005 due to their withdrawal from the Confederations Cup to focus solely on domestic football during the reign of former Romanian mentor Ted Dumitru.

The Soweto giants will be hoping to emulate their rivals Orlando Pirates’ success in the 10-month long tournament.

The Happy People overcame the odds and went all the way to reach the final before losing to eight-time winners, Al Ahly of Egypt.
