CBD: Task team mooted to tackle inner city decay

2013-03-20 00:00

A TOUR of the city centre by councillors to investigate compliance with by-laws found businesses operating from residential areas, many being conducted from illegal structures, and several buildings in a state of disrepair.

In the wake of yesterday’s tour, it was recommended that a task team comprising all municipal business units be formed to address decay in the CBD.

On the corner of Pietermaritz and West streets, city officials showed councillors illegal structures — from which businesses including tuckshops were operating — that were built on areas zoned for residential purposes.

Then the delegation moved to Berg and Greyling streets, where they were shown a number of businesses identified as illegal because the properties were also zoned for residential purposes.

In Prince Alfred Street they saw a dilapidated property being occupied by vagrants.

ANC councillor Sibusiso Mkhize called for a report on the observations to be compiled.
