CCMA may take on cricket row

2013-07-12 00:00

THE dispute between St Charles College and its axed head of cricket, Bruce Roberts, was not resolved on Wednesday and will probably be referred to arbitration at the CCMA.

This was due to the fact that no agreement was reached.

St Charles College, represented by its headmaster, Allen van Blerk, attended the CCMA for the second time within two weeks for the unfair dismissal dispute involving Roberts.

Roberts was charged with “gross misconduct” for sending an e-mail to the father of the 17-year-old pupil who was stripped of his school’s cricket first team captaincy and “offering advice” to him regarding the legal dispute he had with the school over his son.

The pupil’s father had gone to the Pietermaritzburg high court to have his son reinstated as cricket first team captain of St Charles College in May.

Roberts’s dismissal was as a result of his refusal to obey the school’s instruction to communicate only through “formal channels”, Van Blerk had told The Witness early this month.

Roberts was dismissed on June 10, following a disciplinary inquiry, and his dismissal was confirmed in writing on June 14.

The pupil’s father has since issued a letter of demand for payment of R2,1 million in damages against St Charles College coach Dave Karlsen.
