CD review: East of Angel Town by Peter Cincotti

2008-04-18 00:00

Singer-songwriter-pianist Peter Cincotti’s first all-original album is certainly worth a listen. The 23-year-old’s songs are signatured by a percussive piano-playing style, which crosses the boundaries of blues, jazz, rock, pop and funk.

The native New Yorker has been writing music since the age of nine, but East of Angel Town marks his first work of all original material.

His topics range from track to track, from the seductive world of Los Angeles (Angel Town), male and female dynamics in today’s society (Be Careful), a symbolic song of loss (Goodbye Philadelphia — arguably the best of the lot) to the loneliness and love in New York City (Cinderella Beautiful).

Cincotti teamed up with noted producer and l4-time Grammy winner David Foster, producer Humberto Gatica, and producer/sound designer Jochem van der Saag. The result is an intriguing blend of songs, the overall impression being a predominantly blues-laden sound which is less subtle than a purist would like — an inevitable result when the recording is too clean and crisp. That said, you’ll probably hear him on the radio soon enough.
