Cab driver killed: cops appeal for help

2012-04-18 00:00

POLICE are appealing to anyone who might have information about a metered taxi driver who was found dead in a sugarcane field near New Hanover earlier this month.

Sicelo Ndlela (26) was possibly hijacked by a client, having been on night duty on Saturday, March 24, when his vehicle was parked outside the Golden Horse Casino.

The following day he failed to report to his boss, Derrick Mgoza.

“I tried calling him and he wasn’t answering his phone,” said Mgoza.

“I then went to the police. On Monday I went to a tracking company to ask them to mark out where the car was and then they told me that it was already in Johannesburg.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said: “On April 3, the Pietermaritzburg search and rescue unit followed up on information received from the tracking company and … discovered Ndlela’s severely decomposed body.”

The police said Ndlela had received two gunshot wounds to the back and believe that he might have been hijacked by a prospective customer.

The car was found abandoned on April 6 in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Anyone who can assist with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Constable Mandla Ndlovu of the New Hanover Detective Services at 033 502 0011 or at 076 702 3599
