Cable thieves cause havoc in Athlone

2014-06-05 00:00

ATHLONE is the latest Pietermaritzburg suburb to be hit by cable thieves after two sub-stations in Clifton Road were hit sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Similar to the last hit on Prestbury about two weeks ago, the neutral cable was stolen, with devastating effect.

Residents in the area experienced power surges with light bulbs exploding and appliances popping.

According to the Msunduzi electricity task team, the thieves have changed their modus operandi. Previously they would hit sub-stations in the busy industrial areas, but they now target sub-stations in the quieter suburbs. The task team is also reviewing the way it operates to accommodate this change in tactics.
