Call-up : Local star gets nod

2008-11-02 00:00

Standard Cricket Club, KZN Inland and Dolphins all-rounder Morne van Vuuren has been called up to the South African team for the Hong Kong Sixes next week, writes JONATHAN COOK.

Cricket South Africa said on Saturday that Van Vuuren will replace Johann Louw, who is no longer available having been called up to the Proteas’ squad for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh as well as the one-off Pro20 international.

“Van Vuuren is an aggressive, power-hitting batsman and a steady left-arm spinner,” said Gerald Majola, acting convener of the SA selection committee. “He should be ideally suited to this form of cricket.”

The 26-year-old Van Vuuren is currently top of the bowling averages in the SA Airways three-day interprovincial competition.

The Hong Kong Sixes is an annual 10-team international ICC tournament that is made for television and held at the Kowloon Cricket Club. The rules and the venue encourage aggressive batting and high scoring. And as every player other than the wicketkeeper must bowl one over, it is ideal for all-rounders.

In 2006, South Africa beat four-time champions Pakistan.
